CIS Prof Gets Google Grant

October 15, 2015

A project by CIS Prof. Chris Kello entitled “Generating Speech with Critical Branching Networks” has been funded by a Google Faculty Research Grant. The grant will fund graduate student research for the next two years to explore how dynamic networks that Prof. Kello is pioneering can generate synthetic speech. Prof. Kello’s work has also been featured in a prominent recent article in the top journal Psychological Review entitled “Critical Branching Neural Networks.” His networks advance an idea of neural processes based on a kind of fluid model, in which simulated brain activity “flows around” in a reservoir of neurons and can learn and process information. With the Google funding he will extend these techniques to speech synthesis.
